Healthy Heart Bread
Alpine Breads launch their new range of potentially world-first Heart breads, Alpine Heart Fibre and Alpine Heart Wholemeal.
Developed in the Alpine Breads bakery in Benalla, Victoria, the innovative Alpine Heart Breads range is made with BARLEYmax™ grain. BARLEYmax™ is a superior wholegrain with significant health benefits. Consumption of BARLEYmax™ can lower the risk of wide-spread chronic health concerns including cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer and diabetes.
Developed by the CSIRO, BARLEYmax™ is a 100% non-GM wholegrain that promotes good gut and heart health. With a range of beneficial fibres that help to achieve a healthy gut microbiome, BARLEYmax™ packs a nutritional punch.
“BARLEYmax™ is a unique wholegrain, due to the fibre profile of the grain”, says Teri Lichtenstein, Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Brand Ambassador to The Healthy Grain. “With a blend of insoluble fibres, prebiotics including resistant starch, and soluble fibres such as beta-glucan, BARLEYmax™ is able to deliver a range of unique benefits to support optimal digestive health.”
The inclusion of BARLEYmax™ in the Alpine Heart Breads range delivers a minimum of 1g of beta-glucan per serve, which can lower the amount of biliary cholesterol that is re-absorbed by the body as part of a diet containing 3g of beta-glucan per day. Impressively, BARLEYmax™ contains 40% more beta-glucan than oats (on average).
Regarding the launch of the new Alpine Breads Heart range in the Australian market, The Healthy Grain CEO Robert Burbury said “We are thrilled to provide BARLEYmax™ to Alpine as a key ingredient in their innovative Heart Breads range. The long-standing commitment that Alpine has shown to improving the health of Australians through their wholegrain bread range is well aligned with The Healthy Grain vision and we look forward to a long standing, mutually beneficial relationship with Alpine.”
The BARLEYmax™ wholegrain was developed by CSIRO and was initially commercialised by CSIRO and Australian Capital Ventures Limited (ACVL), a Canberra-based venture capital company. The Kebari™ barley technology was developed by CSIRO in collaboration with the Grains Research and Development Corporation.
